Fifth "Guachaca" Summit:
Chileans all-year-long

The upcoming fifth "Guachaca" Summit will gather a diverse group of singers, poets, musicians and artists, all connected to the urban expressions. They are the people you meet at bars, "peñas", clubs and fairs. The idea of Dióscoro Rojas and his mates was born five years ago, and now projects itself not only as an annual tradition but as a whole movement, that with humor and creativity looks for the defense of a celebratory and crafty Chilean identity, akin to wine, conversation, guitars and romance. The "guachaca" identity despises snobs, contemptuous classism and the idealization of what's foreign.

By Rosario Mena

Five years ago, while Santiago hosted a Presidential Summit Meeting, Dióscoro Rojas, Raúl Porto and their friends, gathered at the "La Piojera" bar, their headquarters, decided among wine and laughs to celebrate the first "Guachaca" Summit. A never-before-seen event where, for the first time in centuries, people would have the freedom to express and share with no restraints their likes, music, sayings, food, ideas, wishes and drinks.

A few hours later the fantasy became news and journalists started promoting the party. It was done with massive success and the presence of all the lovers of boleros, old port bars and the "cuecas" from uncle Roberto Parra, the Guachaca movement's spiritual leader. The band Los Tres also was there, dragging with them lots of young people, ignorant of the "guachaca" culture.

The tradition has been kept and, during four consecutive years, Rojas, Porto and their mates have staged this celebration with the unconditional and massive support of artists, people and the media. This year is no exception. Under the slogan "Chileans all-year-round", the event that will take place at the Mapocho Station Cultural Center during April 26th and 27th, will open with the National Hymn played on a horn, followed by a "guachaca" toast and the "guachaca cueca".

"We like singing to the ear of women, softly, like it was a secret. And not like those snobs that, when not telling them about their problems, end up speaking more nonsense than one that has just been operated. We come with good humor, that which you can not see on TV, where you can show your ass but not say ass. We warn you: we will laugh till no longer control our sphincters".

Among the hosts, "born and raised guachacas", there is the actor Roberto Poblete and the boxer Carlos Cruzat with his girlfriend, actress Patricia López. The ancient Trío Inspiración with their boleros, Valparaíso's El Mariposa, Los Chileneros and Concepción's El Canela, cuecas from the port, Coquimbo and Valparaíso, the fair bands, red wine and loin sandwiches are guaranteed. Both days, the party will start at 8 pm and go on until 3 am.

Organizers have invited journalists to a previous meeting. "There, between wine and snacks, we will talk about our desires. For now, we'll just say we are between reality and irreality, we feel more visual than spatial (Where have we heard this before?). On that meeting, our promoters (García sisters's nieces) will offer the "Guachaca Kit", with all those objects a "guachaca" should carry with him: bicarbonate, corkscrew, horse-meat, little stones for the (game) `papaya".

"We'll arrive with the best cuecas, the `cuecas-choras', from the port, played on wood guitars, sang at the top of our voices. Danced looking to the girl's eyes, while with your legs you start showing what she should expect if she keeps on wrapping her skirt and showing so much of her legs".

The Guachaca Movement

Meanwhile, during June 28th and 29th, there will be another Guachaca Summit, this time at the Mauri Theater, in Valparaíso. "We will get together between 8:59 pm and 3 am, and then we will head on a caravan to the Membrillo cove to say hello to Saint Peter, patron of the depths and in charge for the snobs that now control the earth do not control also the heavens".

But the evening will not just be about partying. The group has gotten together like a movement in struggle for the recovery and valorization of the Guachaca tradition, understood as what's most genuine and spontaneous from urban's popular culture. Sustained on Porto's witty writing style, the guachacas have been cooking up a series of proposals, demands and slogans that have infiltrated people not only through their summits, but also with unlikely crusades that even the Congress has heard about.

"Obviously not everything will be singing, drinking and dancing. We will also give work to the brains, because we want to establish the Guachaca Parliament, an organism in charge of legislating and supervise the meeting of all Guachaca ordinances, eliminating any snobbish germ that may appear in our society".

To the defense of the popular "La Piojera" bar with the Ministry of National Property, they add the claims of the Cachagua lands, asking for its return to the guachacas, the legitimate owners of this coastal town, originally called Guachaca Village but inscribed on the legal acts with a change on its syllable. "That is this month's order for all our mates: to recover Guachaca Village, our Village. But now to the force of the law we will add strength and the fists of (boxer) Carlitos Cruzat, a born-and-raised guachaca and current PR person of our movement. So it's on them: we get back Guachaca village or they will see our community up in arms".

The law that establishes a shot of pisco at the entrance of the elevators to avoid sickness, the half-duck law, an alternative to welfare, the so-called Wine Law that establishes a "common barrel", and also the one that authorizes the building of a train in Valparaíso, a city just declared "Mankind's Guachaca Capital", and that will tour every night through the bars Cinzano, Valparaíso Eterno and J. Cruz. All these are some of the multiple, crazy and funny legal initiatives sent to Congress.
