This Wednesday marked a milestone in Chile’s air connectivity with the inauguration of the new Domestic Terminal at Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport. The upgraded facility is designed to address the significant increase in passenger demand, both current and projected, while delivering a higher standard of service and comfort.
With the capacity to handle up to 20 million passengers per year, the new Domestic Terminal positions Santiago Airport as a key hub for national travel. In 2024 alone, the airport recorded 14.2 million domestic passengers, nearly 6 million more than in 2015—highlighting the pressing need for expanded infrastructure.
The project required a $60 million investment, which enabled the complete remodeling of 35,000 square meters of the terminal space. Today, the new Domestic Terminal spans an impressive 131,776 square meters, ensuring travelers enjoy a modern, spacious, and efficient travel experience.
Key Features of the New Domestic Terminal
The expansion includes significant upgrades and facilities that will transform passenger flow and travel efficiency:
- 38 boarding gates, representing a 72% increase compared to 2022.
- 104 check-in counters to streamline passenger processing.
- 50 self-service kiosks for faster check-in.
- 12 baggage carousels, double the number available before the renovation.
- Commercial areas and food courts offering more variety for travelers.
- 11 X-ray machines for regular passengers, strengthening both security and efficiency.
A newly built connection corridor between the Domestic Terminal (T1) and the International Terminal (T2) was also inaugurated. This allows for “mixed flights” (international and domestic) to operate seamlessly from the T2-D building, enhancing operational flexibility.
A Timely Boost for Travelers
Authorities emphasized that the works were completed within the planned schedule, just ahead of Chile’s Fiestas Patrias celebrations. This ensures passengers can now travel with greater comfort and reduced waiting times during one of the busiest travel seasons in the country.
