Cerro San Cristóbal: The Green Heart of Santiago

/

Once a quarry that provided materials for major works such as the Cal y Canto Bridge, Cerro San Cristóbal began its transformation into one of Santiago’s most important green lungs in 1867. Over the years, it has become a cultural, recreational, and spiritual landmark, with the addition of the observatory and the iconic monument to the Immaculate Conception. Today, it is a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists.

Main Attractions of Cerro San Cristóbal

Funicular del Cerro San Cristóbal

Built in 1925, the funicular has long been the most traditional way to reach the summit. This historical monument covers a 500-meter route with three stations:

  • Pío Nono Station – Designed by architect Luciano Kulczewski, this neomedieval-style entrance is located at Pío Nono 450 and can carry up to 40 passengers every 8–15 minutes.
  • Zoo Station – Provides access to the National Zoo.
  • Summit Station – Leads to the Virgin of San Cristóbal viewpoint, inaugurated in 1908 as the final destination for Catholic pilgrimages. The 46-ton statue, modeled after Giuseppe Obici’s Virgin of Rome, was transported from Paris in 42 separate crates and would cost around 350 billion Chilean pesos today.

National Zoo

Opened in 1925, the zoo houses over 1,000 animals from 158 native and exotic species, including the Humboldt penguin, Darwin’s frog, and the majestic Andean condor. While animal captivity can be controversial, the zoo remains a significant feature of the hill.

Swimming Pools

The hill offers two pools—Tupahue and Antilén—surrounded by native vegetation, perfect for summer relaxation. Tupahue features the famous Mural de Piedra by Mexican architect Juan O’Gorman, also known for designing the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera House in Mexico.

Japanese Garden

This serene space, designed by architect Tadashi Asahi and built in 1978, celebrates Japanese-Chilean relations. Reopened in 1997 by Prince and Princess Hitachi, it spans 3,600 m² with traditional elements like a central watermill, “yukimi” lanterns, lotus flowers, cherry trees, and bamboo. Its viewpoint offers breathtaking sunsets over Santiago’s financial district, “Sanhattan.”

Cable Car

Since its 1980 inauguration, the cable car has been a favorite for panoramic city views. After renovations, it reopened in 2016 with modern systems and improved operations. Tickets cost 1,350 CLP (one-way) or 2,250 CLP (round trip). More information is available on the official website.
