Guide for the holidays:

Chilean Celebrations

In towns, cities and fields across Chile; summer brings a number of holidays and traditions that form a valuable lively heritage. These are spaces for the celebration and the gathering, in which the community expresses, shares and fortifies its cultural identity. Here you'll find some of them, from the dessert to the ice zones.

 

North (1):
From Arica to the Loa river

Putre Carnival
This celebration takes place during the last days of February, just before lent. There participate the aimaras, from the Altiplano villages. Besides music and food, there are dances, masks and disguises to represent the Andean cosmovision.

Codpa Wine holiday
Between March and April, it is done at the village of Codpa and it celebrates the grapes with which there are elaborated the pintatani wine, thick and strong.


North (2):
Atacama Zone

North Cattle
Between January and March, it is organized in all the family corrals of the Andean village of Caspana a peculiar ceremony that includes dances, songs and prayers, and where the animals are covered with wool.

Via Crucis at Chiu Chiu
Between March and April, for Holy Friday, it is done at the Altiplano town of Chiu Chiu a traditional Via Crucis that incorporates typical elements making the celebration an interesting spectacle.

Carnival of Atacama
During the second week of February, San Pedro de Atacama, Chiu Chiu, Caspana and the rest of towns of that zone celebrate a carnival full of costumes, typical dances, food and drinks.


North (3):
Desert zone

El Tránsito
During the second week of February, the "Club de huasos" at the town of El Tránsito makes a party which consists in races and folkloric shows.

Wine holiday at San Félix
During the month of February, the town of San Félix, 300 miles from Copiapó at El Carmen River's valley, organize the zone's main party. There are dances at the central square during the weekends attended by people from all the valley. It ends up with a gastronomical festival and a local handcraft contest.

The Pullay Bull holiday
At Tierra Amarilla, at the end of February, there takes place this old and typical holiday with actors at the streets and several characters disguised representing good and evil.

Saint Joseph, the worker
The carpenter Saint is celebrated on March 19 at Los Choros, with a religious party that includes typical dances.

North (4):

Tulahuén Festival
45 minutes away from Monte Patria, towards the mountains, one can find during the second week of February, an exhibit of wine, cheese and textiles.

Valle de Elqui's wine holiday
During all February in Vicuña there is a celebration of the grape harvest with dances, music and rural activities. In Paihuano there are typical holidays such as the summer "pampilla", the starry night and the Grape Voice Festival.

Artistic meeting at Combarbalá
During the Holy Week, at the City of Combarbalá (Fourth Region) there is a meeting of painters and sculptors from the whole country.
